PL-300 is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification. It is the credential employers most often mention in Power BI job descriptions. This article explains what it covers and how to prepare efficiently.
What the exam measures
Microsoft publishes a study guide that lists every skill measured. The skills are grouped into four areas:
- Prepare the data: connecting to sources, profiling and cleaning data, and transforming it in Power Query.
- Model the data: designing a data model, relationships, DAX calculations and model performance.
- Visualize and analyze the data: building reports, choosing and formatting visuals, and using analytical features.
- Manage and secure Power BI: workspaces, sharing, refresh and row-level security.
The weight of each area and the exact list of skills change from time to time, so always check the current study guide before you start.
A study plan
- Weeks 1–2: foundations. Learn the interface, the three views, Power Query basics and the star schema. Build one complete report from a raw file.
- Weeks 3–4: DAX. Measures versus calculated columns,
CALCULATEand filter context, iterators, and time intelligence with a proper date table. - Week 5: reports and the service. Visual choice, formatting, interactions, publishing, apps, refresh and row-level security.
- Week 6: practice and review. Take Microsoft’s free practice assessment, list every question you got wrong, and go back to those skills.
Adjust the pace to your experience. People who use Power BI at work often need less time on the interface and more on DAX and the service.
Practise, don’t just read
The exam includes case studies and scenario questions that describe a business situation and ask what you would do. Reading about a feature is not enough to answer these quickly. For every skill in the study guide, make sure you have done it yourself at least once: built the relationship, written the measure, configured the role.
Signs you are ready
- You can explain filter context and context transition with an example.
- You can build a star schema from a flat file in Power Query without notes.
- You can write year-to-date and same-period-last-year measures and explain what each function does.
- You know when to use a measure, a calculated column or a Power Query column.
- You score consistently well on the practice assessment.
After the exam
The certification is valid for one year and can be renewed for free with an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Keep building: a small portfolio of reports based on public data is often what makes a candidate stand out in interviews.
