DAX AVERAGE function
Returns the average (arithmetic mean) of the numbers in a column.
AVERAGE adds the numbers in a column and divides by how many there are, under the current filters.
Syntax
AVERAGE(<column>)| Argument | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|
| column | Required | The column that contains the numbers to average. |
Returns: A decimal number. Blank if there are no numbers.
Examples
Calculated on the free practice data (table financials), with [Total Sales] = SUM(financials[Sales]) and [Total Profit] = SUM(financials[Profit]).
1. Average sale price by product
Avg Sale Price = AVERAGE(financials[Sale Price])| Product | Avg Sale Price |
|---|---|
| Amarilla | 128.68 |
| Carretera | 111.77 |
| Montana | 117.10 |
| Paseo | 108.18 |
| Velo | 115.24 |
| VTT | 138.59 |
| Total | 118.43 |
Each product is sold at several prices; this is the mean price over its sales rows. The total is the mean over all 700 rows, not the average of the product averages.
Good to know
- Blank cells are skipped; zeros are counted. That difference changes the result.
- To average a calculation per row, or per group (like per country), use AVERAGEX.
